It is a protected area and is a refuge for protected animal and plant species
The area includes the largest sandy grassland in northern Bavaria. Typical of this landscape form are the low storage capacity of water, the low nutrient content of the soil and, compared to other biotopes of Central Europe, extreme temperature differences. The loose, often interrupted by sandy areas vegetation consists of grasses and low-growing herbs. The special feature of the vegetation of the Hainberg is the bright, brownish coloring of the lawns.
