The Kiel police chief approved the name on May 18, 1934. By order of the Kiel Council of May 21, 1987, the name was changed to Hiroshima Park. [2] On the northwestern part of the grounds of today about 16,000 square meters large park stood on Lorentzendamm from 1868 until its destruction in 1944, the Kiel School of Scholars. From 1950 to 2002, the sandstone sculpture Die Schlummernde by Richard Engelmann was in the park. In the meantime, it has been returned to its original location in Schrevenpark, where it had stood since 1926. Since 1986, the park takes place every year on 6 August a memorial service in memory of the atomic bombing in Hiroshima instead.
