The Kieler Schlossgarten was designed as a small Renaissance garden when Adolf I expanded the castle from 1558 to 1568 into a lavish Renaissance seat. Duchess Friederike Amalie had the complex rebuilt in 1695 to a magnificent baroque garden. However, this was no longer maintained after its heyday and formed the basis for the installation of an English landscape garden in the mid-19th century. After the Second World War, the plant was neglected. The upper part was used as a parking lot for university hospital. Since 2007, the flower beds around the equestrian statue have been created according to historical plans. In 2010 the terraces were restored.
