It all started with Metaphius T.A. Long book. The city gardener had a penchant for rare woody plants. When he laid out the city park in the district of Sankt Gertrud in 1897, he planted rarities such as a sequoia or a cucumber magnolia in addition to native species. The city park today houses about 700 trees and 40 different species. They have developed stately trunks and crowns and were partly planted by Langenbuch himself - so they are over one hundred years old and now real "crown jewels".
In the midst of the Gründerzeit villa district of Sankt Gertrud, the city park is located in a silted bay of the Wakenitz. Its representative main entrance is set in the form of a semicircle of box lime and a magnificent rose bed. The plant itself is based on the idea of an idealized image of nature. Scattered tree groups form the romantic backdrop for wide lawns and ponds: Here, the dark red dress of a beech is reflected on the water surface, where hanging books and weeping willows dangle their branches into the water. On the shores of an ancient spring pond, a frog prince waits for the kiss that redeems him. Curved paths lead through the time-honored tree stands and along the banks of the pond. Smaller islands support the enchanted atmosphere.
