In 1892, the foundation stone was laid for the Göttingen Bismarck tower. In a letter of the same year, former Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, who had studied in Göttingen, gave his consent to designate the tower after him.
The tower is financed exclusively by private donations, built by a specially founded association and handed over to the city of Göttingen after final completion in 1898.
