Botanical gardens and grasses - despite their obvious differences - represent a botanical museum. Both were born in the sixteenth century and initially had an outstanding teaching function, particularly related to the teaching of medicinal botany, allowing students to observe and study medicinal plants; today many others were added to this use, with a development closely related to the evolution or decline of plant science . In the case of Bologna, this development has always gone hand in hand, to the extent that the largest groups in Herbarium belong specifically to the groups that were the principal director of the botanical garden.
