The garden was created on a marshy site where there were vegetable gardens whose revenues - the prebends - were paid to the Provost of Oé under the Ancien Régime. It was crossed by the brook of the archbishop who was channeled by the city. Following the example of major works programs undertaken during the Second Empire in Paris, provincial towns are gradually acquiring landscaped parks in the English way. The public gardens are a privileged place of walk for city families, a recreational space for children where adults meet during concerts given in the kiosk by municipal or military music.
