In the square there is the monument of the Treonfo de la Candelaria, also called the Basilica of Candelaria, one of the main monuments in the city, dedicated to the Virgin of Candelaria, the patron of the Canary Islands, named this square.
Tryonfo de la Candelaria
Triunfo de la Candelaria is also called Obelisco de la Candelaria, one of the city's major monuments. The monument is white marble and sculpted by sculptor Pasquale Pociardo in 1768.
Originally it was 11 meters high on a square base, currently 4 meters. At the base there are four marble statues representing the Guanches, who glorify the image of the Virgin of Candelaria, located at the top of the obelisk.
There are many inscriptions indicating the devotion that Canary has always been through this protest of the Virgin. Many travel books written in the 19th and 20th centuries described this monument, because until the twentieth century it was the first religious monument and symbol first seen by travelers after their arrival in Tenerife.
