Ancient harmony between agricultural activities and the natural environment
It appears among large plateaus with gentle ripples in which wet environments, wood, grasslands, and cultivated fields alternate. The plans of Colfiorito or Plestini plateaus consist of seven Karstic basins, occupied in reigns far from the lakes. Palf di Colfiorito is currently the only region of the highlands where water lasts all year and suffers from seasonal fluctuations only. The other floors are only temporarily submerged after rainfall.
The marshes are a reference point for a large number of birds, which build their nests among reeds, breed and feed. For this reason, in 1995 the Umbria region decided to protect it by establishing a regional park. It is included in the Ramsar Convention, which emphasizes its international importance for natural aspects and has been identified by the European Community as a Special Conservation Reserve (SAC) because of the importance of preserving the environment for the current bird community.
