Mentioned already in 1213 as Kampe, or "clump." From the fourteenth century, called "Bolko", in honor of the Piast prince, with the consent of the church authorities. In German, until 1945 the name "Bolko-Insel" and "Las Minorytów" (1811) were in force. From 1945 to 2004, the official name was "Bolkowa Kępa", but it was forgotten in favor of "Bolko Island", which was officially named after the municipal vote in 2004. On the Island, until the early 20th century, there were several arable fields and a dense forest. On October 27, 1910, Opole councilors decided to create a city park there, so most of the forest was grubbed up, the most magnificent oaks were left (including Piastowski Oak with a circumference of 410 cm and age 400), beeches and hornbeams. Many new bushes and trees were planted, avenues and viewing terraces were marked out. A zoo was established in the 1930s.
