The Bijlmer Park was originally laid out in 1969 and 1970. Since 1975 the Kwakoe Summer Festival has been organized here every year.
The Zuidoost district redesigned the park in the period 2009-2011, with the cooperation of Francine Houben of the Mecanoo architectural firm. The 43-hectare park includes sports fields and a sports and play area, partly designed by young people and children from the city district. There is also a butterfly hill, a magnolia valley and water features. Homes will be built along the edges of Nelson Mandela Park in the future. In the tree garden are the national trees of the countries where the inhabitants of Southeast originally came from.
