Before the Castle Park was created, the site was a military exercise area for the Crown Prince's Regiment of Regents. They wanted to create a large, coherent green area on the remaining land. In 1896 the Nordic Industrial and Craft Exhibition was organized in Malmö and in connection with the exhibition a smaller planting was done along the Fersen road. After the exhibition, it was decided that all old military land would be converted into a park area. They turned to Danish landscape architect Edvard Glæsel.
