The peony garden was built in 2003 with some 25 different types of peonies. The plant selection was made by the well-known pioneer Herman Krupke from Ulricehamn. The history of the peony starts as early as 600 BC. in the imperial courts of China and Japan. The flower, which at all times symbolized wealth and royalty, has inspired both artists, gardeners and poets and it now seems to have received a renaissance as a garden plant. In China and Japan, people gather in thousands for special peony festivals and give each other pioneers of friendship and success. It is said that the world's oldest bush peony grows at a monastery in China and that it is 700 years old. No other flower in the garden is as loved as the peony. It has been in Sweden ever since the monks brought it into their herb gardens hundreds of years ago. There are about 3,000 different varieties and species to choose from.
