There were two monkeys, peacocks, deer, mules, pigs, and Guinea in the zoo. Today, the zoo has animals from around the world, almost. 2000 different animals, covering 147 species such as chimpanzees, monkeys, round-tailed lemurs, Siberian tiger, Grévy zebra, giraffe, red panda, West Indian lamb, ostrich, penguin, pink-backed swan, flamingos, parrots, and giant tortoises. In 2001, the Odense "Oceanium" Zoo opened with a value of 60 million Danish crowns featuring the lives of animals in South America, from the Amazon rainforest to Antarctica.
In 2008 Odense Zoo was the most popular tourist attraction in Funen and number 9 in Denmark, and in 2013 it won the "Best in Europe" award in its category (zoos with up to 500,000 visitors per year). The visitor book was set for the first year of "Oceanium" when the zoo welcomed 43,933 visitors.
