Until 1866, the area was an upstream part of the Hamburg city fortification, to which the name also goes back, since the defensive buildings of the 17th century were designed in star form. He was separated from the ramparts by the construction of the railway line between Hamburg and Altona.
In Schanzenpark is the water tower, which was built in 1907 for the Hamburg waterworks and was in operation until 1961. After that, he stood for a long time empty, from 2005-2007 he was rebuilt in protests to a hotel.
