The Botanical Garden of the Heinrich-Heine University is situated in the south of Düsseldorf at the Himmelgeister Rheinbogen (bend in the Rhine). As a research facility, it is not only dedicated to research and teaching, it is also open to visitors throughout the year and offers a wide range of events including exhibitions, expert guided tours and lectures. The Botanical Garden was founded in 1974. The main focus is on plants from the temperate climate zones. The impressive centrepiece of the garden is the 18-metre high glass dome – an over 1000-square-metre unheated greenhouse, which houses approx. 400 plant species from areas with warm, dry summers and rainy winters. Besides the characteristic vegetation of the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands, plants from almost all parts of the earth are on display: Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Africa, Chile and California.
